Songs of the Shenandoah A Novel An Heirs of Ireland Novel Michael K Reynolds 9781433678219 Books

Characters: The characters are what truly make this novel sing. Through the previous books, we meet the Hanley family. In this novel, there is a strong focus on three of the siblings, Clare, Seamus, and Davin. Each are striving to find their own purpose in a country that is being torn apart by war. Clare finds herself being the support her husband needs as well as being a strong voice to the oppressed in New York City. Seamus has left the ministry only to find a new purpose in the Shenandoah Valley and the Confederacy. Davin is searching for redemption.

Storyline: This novel certainly visits some aspects of the war that I don't think we often read in fiction or hear about in general. During the actual war, there are focuses on the Irish brigades while in New York City there are scenes demonstrating the social tensions that the North was feeling during the war. Throughout these historical moments, a thread of faith is woven through. Some characters lean on it while others are discovering it.

My Thoughts: Out of the series of these three books, this one was probably my favorite. There were so many unexpected moments in the story. Like the previous two, this one was just as beautifully written and just as poignant. Through the scenes of war hopelessness there is an element of faith and hope that shines. It is something for both characters and readers to grab a hold of.

I would recommend reading the first two novels, Flight of the Earls and In Golden Splendor, prior to reading this one. It will help with knowing who characters are and some of their backgrounds. However, most of the plot of this story could be read as a standalone novel.

Songs of the Shenandoah A Novel An Heirs of Ireland Novel Michael K Reynolds 9781433678219 Books Reviews

It was great getting a close up look at the war may have affected the lives of those who lived it. Kind of brings it up close and personal. I would like for my daughter who home schools to have her children feed it.
This was a very good story of one man's struggle to grow up and find what he was really meant to be. Seamus is the brother of Clare the strong woman who took care of her family in their struggles to leave Ireland and make a new home in the United States. Seamus was the middle child and the one that had the most problems being a responsible person. This novel brings us along on his struggles in growing up and becoming a man to be proud of; the struggles in the west and then in the civil war; all helping to form him into the man he is.
Songs of the Shenandoah is the third book of the Heirs of Ireland trilogy and just like the other two, was excellent. It isn't often that I am willing to give up my nightly sleep to read books, but these three caused just to happen. I loved all three books and would recommend them highly!
This whole series was worth every word spoken. Very moving and an engaging read! These characters are like family and I long to read more of their adventures. So I hope there is another book in the works. Thank you Michael for a great time in both Ireland’s history and the United State’s history.
I've anticipated this last novel in the Heirs of Ireland trilogy, and it was worth the wait! In SONGS OF THE SHENANDOAH, Reynolds carries the Hanley family into the American Civil War and takes his readers along for the ride, and what a ride it is! As a history buff, I was especially delighted to experience this difficult period in American history from all sides of the picture as Reynolds presents the war from the viewpoints of Union and Rebel soldiers, a reporter, chaplains, medics, and slaves, as well as those left behind to defend homes and businesses. One of Reynolds great talents as a writer is to bring out details and information without sacrificing the story. Don't miss this lyrical and well-written saga!
I'll be completely honest....when I first opened this book out of the envelope, I grimaced at how long this book was. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to read it all in time because there were over 400 pages. Not knowing if I'd like it anyway, I braced myself when I started the first page. What I didn't expect was to be sucked in and reading over 100 pages a night! I didn't want this story to end. No wonder it's so long! There was a lot of story to tell. In fact, I liked this book so much that when it went on sale for the kindle, I bought this one and the first two books so I could see what I had missed. With that said, I never once felt like I was missing something by not having read the first 2 books.

I normally have a hard time getting into these books, but I really want to like them. That said, I always like to give them a chance to be read. I am so glad I did with this one. I've never read anything by Michael K. Reynolds, but he is an excellent storyteller. He brought the Civil War alive for me. Brothers fighting brothers, the horror of the slaves, and so much more. I didn't really know that the Irish immigrants had been involved in any way and was shocked at how they were treated and how they treated others. (I'm Irish myself, so I really found that interesting.)

The love between Seamus and Davin towards the end blew me away. Davin's selfless act was beautiful. I was shocked by Murial and never saw through her secret and never ever expected for it to be what it really was. My heart broke for Cassie towards the end as hatred is taken out on her. I loved seeing the church come together for the cause of the newspaper and watching miracle after miracle take place through the book. It's really hard to sum this book up in a few sentences because it's one of those that just leaves you feeling complete. Bad things happened, but you see God's hand through it all. Relationships are formed, people die, and wars occur. But God is still there and is still answering prayers and still working.

I am definitely looking forward to going back to read the first two books and can't wait for him to come out with another series. I'll expect it to be a big book this time, though!
